McCarthy saw Communists at every turn, exposing any individual who did not agree with his exceeding narrow, limited, ignorant point of view as a "Communist". Perhaps it was due to his almost perpetual state of drunkenness or in response to his attempts to mask his massive inferiority complex. Glenn Beck is certainly walking in his mentors footsteps.

One should not forget to mention Robert Kennedy when speaking of Joe McCarthy. Bobby not only worked on Senator McCarthy's crusade against the evil communists but admired him personally and became very close to the Senator. One should remember the whole story when talking about a subject.

Advertisers choose where to spend their money based on the target audiences listening. The power of the expanding media give all of us more choices. And with all those choices "we the people" have the power to listen and watch what interests us. It is also frightening in this time of great change that the people in power want absolutely no opposition. Freedom of the press is very important especially in today's environment. If you are on the side of removing the rights of your opponent then someday.... someone will remove yours.

Yeah, Glenn Beck, smearing Van Jones with his own quotes and videos. Total smear to quote Van Jones as calling himself a "communist" who wants to "change the whole system", starting with the environmental movent. Doesn't Beck know people shouldn't be accountable for their actions?

Do you know how a TV show or radio station makes money? Advertising. Advertising money comes in based on the number of viewers. For some reason, advertising on predominately liberal programs is failing. That's because of a lack of viewers. So if you want to save liberal media, watch it. Tell your friends. But if people don't watch it, stations don't get funding, and "evil" capitalists don't want to waste money on a product people don't want.

Thanks for your thoughtful and well-researched post. In these days of deteriorating political discourse, I need more than ever the important information you share on the forces driving today's media as well as suggestions for action as artists. Pete Seeger has been one of my artist activist heroes for years and a great example of the power of art. Thank you for the info and inspiration!
